FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

DOMINIC BEKAERT is a Filipino-Belgian audiovisual director and film preservationist who lives and works in Manila. He was previously based in Paris, France, where he studied film production at ESEC (Ecole Supérieure d’études Cinématographiques) and graduated with a Master Degree in Film Preservation at the French National Institute for Audiovisual (INA). While living in France, he directed several short films, ads, and music videos. He moved back to Manila in 2016 to head the National Film Archives of the Philippines, where he spearheaded the preservation and restoration of classic films “Insiang” by National Artist Lino Brocka, “Noli Me Tangere” by National Artist Gerry De Leon, and “Batang Westside” by Lav Diaz, among others. In 2019, he founded his own production company Zoopraxi Studio, with his wife/partner Clementine Bekaert and conceptualized, produced, directed, and edited multi-awarded music videos, ads, and a visual album.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

In the dynamic socio-cultural landscape of the Philippines, where the intersection of social classes is a ubiquitous aspect of daily life, the relationship between a driver and his boss offers a unique lens through which to examine the intimacy that can exist across seemingly insurmountable divides. The driver, hailing from more modest origins, finds himself in close proximity to his affluent boss. This closeness transcends a mere business association— it offers the driver an unfiltered and unadulterated glimpse of his boss’ life. The car works as a social lens and as a time machine allowing Moroy to relive echoes from the past and reflect on his unfulfilled dreams. As a film director who is half-Filipino and half- French, I have always been fascinated by class divides and how we deal with them as individuals and as societies. The relationships in the film offer a microcosmic view of the broader human experience, where active and passive dynamics continually shape interactions and reveal layers of identity.
